Learn more about the planned Ingersoll Run construction project timeline and the street closures that will affect traffic around the project.
Although the name of the project lends one to believe that Ingersoll Ave. is going to be impacted, the greatest disruption is going to be along Martin Luther King Jr. Pkwy from SW 15th St. to SW 2nd St.
The WRA is currently designing the WRA Ingersoll Run Outlet Sewer (INGRO) to intercept the combined sewer flow from the area west of MLK Parkway. It is anticipated that the pipe size will be 5 feet in diameter which will require a significant construction area along the alignment of the sewer. The alignment of this sewer is shown in the map above. The project will be broken into three separate construction segments (also shown above) with the following anticipated schedules:
The planned route for this project has been established and any adjustments to the alignment, other than what is included above, will likely not be possible. Events will need to be adjusted to avoid and/or to circumnavigate the project area. Businesses along the project alignment will also need to be prepared for the impacts of the project.
Segment 1 Construction Timeline:
-Pipe Installation, Paving and Rough Grading: Spring 2023 – December 2024
- North lanes of MLK will be closed
- South lanes will be head-to-head traffic
- Trails will be open
- Intersections will be open except at SW 2nd
Segment 2 Construction:
This is currently under design with an approximate bid date of late 2023 and potential construction 2024-2025
Segment 3 Construction:
Construction began in 2022 and will last through summer 2023
- Winter 2023: 19th between Ingersoll and High will be under construction
- Spring 2023: High St. at MLK to almost 22nd St. construction with open cutting
- Late Spring 2023: 19th and Ingersoll to 18th and Ingersoll - open cut construction and lane reduction for north side.
Detours and temporary access will be coordinated wherever possible. WRA is working with the City of Des Moines Traffic and Transportation Department to establish detours and temporary access where needed.
